Employer of Choice Awards 2018

IMPORTANT: Please read information below to assist you in completing your entry online.

An Employer of Choice is a workplace with a reputation as a great place to work. The Awards recognise and promote Tasmanian organisations that, regardless of their size, successfully attract and retain skilled employees.

Tasmanian Employers of Choice say that being officially recognised gives them the edge in the competition for skilled labour. They are entitled to use the Employer of Choice logo in any recruitment, advertising or other company promotional material.

Employers of Choice share ideas on business improvement at workshops and forums supported by Skills Tasmania and the Department of State Growth.

The following organisations are eligible to enter:

  1. Tasmanian businesses, enterprises, community and local government organisations that have one or more physical workplaces in Tasmania and directly employ Tasmanian staff in operating their services.
  2. State government organisations that:
  3. Are not part of ‘The Crown’; and
  4. Are not bound by the State Service Act

Commonwealth government organisations are not eligible.

Group training organisations or other employment brokers are eligible only as an employer for their direct employees. Employees placed with host employers are not accepted as direct employees of the group training organisation or employment broker.

Entrants are required to complete the entry form and if short-listed, agree to a workplace visit by the judging panel, which will include separate interviews with the employer (business owner/ CEO/ senior management team) and staff.

Entrants must complete Parts A, B, C and D of the entry form

  • Part A – organisation details and contact points.
  • Part B – five questions – written responses of not more than 500 words per question. Additional evidence can be attached if it                       directly supports the claims made in the application.
  • Part C – endorsement of the entry by the employer and two or more ‘non-management’ employees.
  • Part D - submit

Entry process and judging

All entrants will be notified by email of receipt of their entry.

Entries will be judged by a panel comprising departmental officers and representatives of current Employers of Choice.

The judging panel will select one or more organisations as the Tasmanian Employers of Choice for 2018. The panel will base its decisions on written entries and workplace visits of short-listed entrants.

The 2018 Tasmanian Employers of Choice will be announced at an awards event to be held in mid-2018. All entrants will be invited to attend.

Terms and conditions of entry

All entry documentation must be received by the department by Friday 15 December 2017, via the online system.  Late entries and paper entries will not be accepted.

  1. Staff of the department may contact the employer and employee(s) who have jointly endorsed the entry to seek further information, clarification and/or to arrange a workplace visit.
  2. Entrants must agree to abide by the decision of the judging panel.
  3. A PDF copy of the entry will be emailed to the entrant upon successful submission of online entry.
  4. All material submitted to the department will be used for the purpose it is intended and will not be circulated.  No material relating to the entry will be publicised without prior approval.
  5. The Employer of Choice logo is provided to all Tasmanian organisations recognised as Employers of Choice by the Tasmanian Government.
  6. Use of the logo is permitted under a Licence Agreement between the Crown (Department of State Growth) and the Employer of Choice organisation (the Licensee).
  7. Upon formal legal execution of the Employer of Choice Licence Agreement, the logo can be used to promote the Licensee’s Tasmanian Business Operations as an Employer of Choice.

Welcome to the Department of State Growth’s Employer of Choice Awards online entry, powered by SmartyGrants.

This portal is accessed in the same way you might access an email account, i.e. by setting up a basic account using your email address and a password of your choice.

You may begin anywhere in this entry form. Please ensure that you save as you go.

It is possible for more than one person to use the login and password to work on your entry. It is important that only one user works on the entry at a time in order to avoid losing work.

Entrants need to complete all sections to ensure a valid entry is submitted.

For queries about the guidelines, deadlines, or questions in the form, please contact us on 1800 440 026 during business hours or email

If you wish to leave a partially completed entry, press 'save' and log out. When you log back in and click on the 'My Submissions' link at the top of the screen, you will find the entry you have started or submitted. You can reopen your draft entry and start where you left off.

You may upload/submit attachments to support your entry. This is very simple, but requires you to have the documents saved on your computer, or on a storage device.

You need to allow enough time for a file to upload before trying to attach another file. Files can be up to 5MB each.

You will find a Review and Submit button at the bottom of the Navigation Panel. You need to review your entry before you can submit it.

Once you have reviewed your entry you can submit it by clicking on 'Submit' at the top of the screen or on the navigation panel. You will not be able to submit your entry until all the compulsory questions (marked with a *) are completed.

Once you have submitted your entry, no further editing or uploading of support materials is possible.

When you submit your entry, you will receive an automated confirmation email with a copy of your submitted entry attached. This will be sent to the email you used to register.

If you do not receive a confirmation of submission email then you should presume that your entry has NOT been submitted.
